A friend of mine quietly recommended I explain the Silk Purse, Oily Rag philosophy a bit better. She said, “You need to explain yourself. Why and what’s it about? But just don’t go on about it too much”. Here goes.
My big dream for Silk Purse, Oily Rag is to create a genuinely followed blog dedicated to real style and real women. I want to share ideas, information and inspiration about clothes in a way that uplifts and makes us feel good about ourselves.
I would love to see more women embrace their individuality in style, and be resourceful in the way they go about acheiving it.
Knowing yourself well and being in tune with your tastes is where this process starts. Being ‘authentic’, ‘unique’ and ‘original’ are other words I like to use. They’re a bit cliche’, I know. But they’re all words that lead in the same direction, which is to encourage women who love fashion to develop a personal style that’s their own.
Being resourceful is the other aspect of Silk Purse, Oily Rag that is at its core. You could say that being ‘resourceful’ is really just a word for ‘being clever and applying some effort’ to the business of dressing ourselves.
I’m always on a mission to get more style from each dollar I spend, and I want to share what I have learned about that. This isn’t necessarilly about buying second hand clothes all the time, or being the queen of cheap and cheerful (although that might be part of what works for you).
It’s actually about understanding how to make better choices for you and your budget, whatever that is. Investing in quality, looking after your stuff, and strategising your spend are principles I like a lot. Learning skills around putting it altogether and generally looking your best are themes that go along with it.
Some other Silk Purse, Oily Rag principles? I try to put style ahead of a fashion. I would love to see more women pick and choose bits and pieces from fashion that genuinely appeals to their sense of personal style. Let’s dispel the myth that to have style, you “must have” something – anything – that’s fashionable, ‘it’, or ‘in’.
If all of any of this appeals to you, then do follow @silkpurseoilyrag on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest. I would love to share my style journey with you.
